Taoism Folk Tale There once was a poor man with nothing in life but his son and his horse. One day his horse ran away. All the neighbors came to comfort him on his bad luck, but all he said was, "how do you know it is bad luck." The next day his horse came back with a herd of wild horses! Again all his neighbors came, but this time to congratulate him on his good luck, but all he said was, "How do you know it is good luck." A few days later his son was trying to tame the wild horses when he was thrown and broke his leg. Yet again the neighbors came by to console him but again he said, "how do you know it's bad luck." This time though they all laughed at him. A week or so later their country started a war and all the young men from the village were taken into the service, except the man's son since he was lame.
